Meister also says City Council members should promise to no longer take campaign contributions from energy-related entities
Baltimore, Md., June 20 – Adam Meister, Democratic candidate for Baltimore City Council in the 11th District, today outlined his ideas for lessening the blow of the recent energy rate hikes. “By immediately abolishing Baltimore’s energy tax for residential gas and electric customers, the mayor and City Council have the power to reduce the pain caused by energy rate hikes,” declared Meister.
“Additionally, the notorious Baltimore City Telecommunications Tax surcharge for cell phones should be eliminated. In due course, there must also be a full investigation into Baltimore’s haphazard water billing procedures, which could result in smaller bills for residents,” said Meister, who has been recognized for running an innovative, idea-driven campaign.
Other candidates may talk in generalities, but Adam Meister has actually laid out a concrete plan for easing the financial burden currently being endured by Baltimore families.
Meister continued, “To ensure that the elimination of the above taxes does not cause a major revenue shortfall and to make it harder for energy companies to cut off power to Baltimore residents, I propose that Baltimore requires all energy companies to issue a three day “power cut-off notice” with the City at the cost of $50, while simultaneously posting this “power cut-off notice” on the doors of residents’ homes. Just as landlords must file a notice and pay a fee to the city when they wish to evict a tenant, so too should multi-billion dollar energy companies have to file notice with customers and pay the city a fee.”
Adam Meister has unparalleled experience actually interacting with residents in the streets of Baltimore, not just in his own neighborhood of Reservoir Hill, but throughout the 11th District. His “man of the people” approach is not an election-season act, but a reflection of his true character – so much so that today he also urged all City Council members to promise to no longer take campaign contributions from energy-related entities. “City Council should lead by example and stop favoring powerful entities like BGE, Mercy Hospital, and UB over the interests of Baltimore residents.”
“Ultimately,” said Meister, “the only way to ensure a complete rollback of rate hikes is to re-regulate the energy sector and the mayor and City Council should put pressure on our state legislators to do just that.”

The “Clean Candidate” for Baltimore’s 11th District, Adam Meister celebrates six months of community cleanups in Pigtown – the same day he contributes to neighborhood cleanups in Barre Circle, Bolton Hill, and the Chase House
Baltimore, MD – April 21, 2007
Adam Meister’s campaign for Baltimore’s 11th District City Council seat was proud to be present at the 2007 Pigtown Block Party on Saturday April 21, which celebrated six months of successful community cleanups, which have removed over one hundred tons of trash and debris from Pigtown.
Adam Meister has been there from the beginning and was happy to see that other city officials also recognized the achievement of the community by showing up for this anniversary celebration. Residents of all ages were joined by Mayor Sheila Dixon, outgoing councilman and mayoral candidate Keiffer Mitchell, and Delegate Melvin Stukes.
But just because this was a day to celebrate does not mean it was a day of rest! More than ten volunteers took part in a four-hour morning cleanup between Hamburg Street and Glyndon Avenue before taking part in the revelry.
Of particular note: It took over four hours to fill a Baltimore City Sanitation truck – a task that used to take only three hours to complete. This proves that progress is certainly being made. Residents are doing a great job keeping their streets and alleys clean and illegal dumping is not nearly as prevalent as it was just months ago.
Commenting on the event, and the cleanups it celebrated, Meister said, “It’s an inspiring story to hear that there have been roughly 700 homes sold in and around Pigtown in just the last two and a half years. This would not have been possible without continued community commitment and dedication. Other neighborhoods are rightly looking at Pigtown as a model for neighborhood rejuvenation.”
Despite taking time to clean and celebrate in Pigtown, Adam also took time Saturday to clean Barre Circle, Bolton Hill, and the Chase House with other residents.
“Baltimoreans want cleaner streets and I have been overwhelmed by the positive outpouring of support for my efforts to beautify as many neighborhoods as we possibly can. A clean city is a city that has regained its self-respect, and only with self-respect can a city progress and prosper,” said Meister.

Joined by neighborhood residents and supporters, Adam Meister, Democratic candidate for Baltimore City Council (11th District) rolled up his sleeves and picked up trash and debris around the Lafayette Square neighborhood on Sunday.
“We must bring back pride and hope to our communities by removing the plague of dirt, trash, drug paraphernalia, and broken glass that we currently tolerate. Children should be able to play in neighborhood parks without their parents worrying about them stepping on drug syringes or cutting themselves on broken bottles,” said Meister.
Adam Meister is a veteran organizer of neighborhood cleanups in Baltimore. He has organized and participated in several in his Reservoir Hill neighborhood and has plans for more throughout the 11th District.
A neighborhood cleanup, like the one today around Lafayette Square, is a proactive measure that makes the community safer and more livable. “It’s unacceptable to have trash and debris pile up along sidewalks and alleys. These cleanups are also a terrific opportunity to get to know neighborhood residents and learn about their specific community concerns,” said Meister.

11th Councilmanic District Candidate Gains key support in historic “Pigtown”
Baltimore, MD – February 12, 2007
Adam Meister, Democratic candidate for Baltimore City’s 11th District City Council seat earned the endorsement of the Washington Village Developers Association on Monday.
“Adam Meister supports Pigtown like no other City Council candidate and once elected Adam will skillfully represent the 11th District,” said Washington Village Developers Association President Dan Cosgrove.
The Washington Village Developers Association has recently increased its role in the Pigtown community by organizing weekly community clean-ups every Saturday since October, 2006. Adam Meister regularly pitches in during these clean-ups and contributed to their increased efficiency by recommending a Baltimore City sanitation truck be onsite to remove even more trash. With use of the truck, over ten tons of trash were collected and disposed of in just one day.
“Pigtown, like Reservoir Hill and many other Baltimore neighborhoods, suffers from drug and crime problems and these clean-ups enhance residents’ quality of life. Repeatedly, I’ve organized similar clean-ups in Reservoir Hill and as a member of the City Council I will continue to get my hands dirty in an effort to rejuvenate our neighborhoods. I am proud to have the support of the people of Pigtown and I am eager to represent them and the entire 11th District as a member of the Baltimore City Council,” said Meister.
Adam Meister became the first candidate to file for any Baltimore City Council race on January 29, 2007. He has a growing network of support throughout the district and plans to organize additional clean-ups and community beautification activities in the coming months.

Reservoir Hill Community Leader and Activist Starts Early in Order to Raise Funds
Baltimore, MD – January 30, 2007
Adam Meister (Democrat – 11th District) became the first person to file for any Baltimore City Council race on Monday afternoon as he rides his campaign’s wave of increasing momentum and positive word of mouth.
“Since news of my candidacy spread around Baltimore and beyond, I have received phone calls of well wishes and enthusiastic support from people telling me they are eager to take the 11th District and Baltimore as a whole in a new, positive direction. The fact that we have kicked off the campaign so early is a testament to residents’ desire for dynamic leadership ready to offer a new approach in government – an approach that will improve the quality of life for all City residents.
Meister chose Heritage Crossing activist and resident Denitia Fleming as Treasurer of his campaign. Louis Rouse of Bolton Hill was named Chairman.
With the official filing, potential contributors can begin to send donations and Meister can build his war chest. The first full day of work for Friends of Adam Meister is Tuesday, January 30, 2007, and the campaign has set a high bar for itself. The campaign hopes to raise a significant amount of funds by April. With that money Meister plans to target every section of the diverse district that includes Reservoir Hill, Bolton Hill, Madison Park, Druid Heights, Upton, Harlem Park, Mount Vernon, Heritage Crossing, Seton Hill, Poppleton, Barre Circle, Ridgely’s Delight, Otterbein, North Federal Hill, the Downtown Business District, parts of Sandtown, parts of Penn-North, and parts of Pigtown.
“You are going to see me everywhere,” said Meister, who is known for starting Techbalt.com, a Reservoir Hill based housing initiative, and for jogging at least five miles per day throughout Baltimore. “This campaign is going to be run with a fervor and dedication that befits this great and potentially awesome district.”
